All of them. Hell maybe you have.

Here are the other films: Election with Reese Witherspoon. (I bet you didn’t know it was him)

About Schmidt: Was Jack Nicholson robbed of his fourth Oscar? Hard to say. The film was robbed of a Best Picture nod (I’d take over Chicago any day)

Nebraska: This one you might not have heard of. An old man (played by Bruce Dern in one of his greatest roles) gets one of those sweepstakes letter saying he’s won a million dollars. Except he’s diminished enough to think he actually has. Rather than return it by mail, he travels to Denver to get it, accompanied by his estranged son and wife. It was a strong field for Actors in 2013, so its hard to know if Dern should have beated Matthew McCoungahey that year. I truly realized the potential of Will Forte as Dern’s son and June Squibb was exceptional as wife.

And considering everything that happened this week, I have a suspicion the world will start rewatching Payne’s first movie Citizen Ruth, a satire about how the pro-choice and pro-life camps try to use a pregnant glue sniffer to advance their cause. Another in a long line of great performances by Laura Dern.

All of these movies were set in what we refer to as flyover country. Considering how brilliant Payne’s films set in California and Hawaii were he may be an American filmmaker in both sense of the term. I wait with anticipation his next movie.
