As someone who has been arguing that the left has a de facto reaction to dismiss all people who vote Republican, take Republican attiudes or argue than even the slightest deviation from an Overton window on any issue is the sign of bigotru, I fullu applaude the sentiment of this article. We may not love our enemies but we have to at try to understand them. If we don't, all of things we claim to fight for are pointless. Voltaire famously said: I disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. The moment either said says only the first part of the statement applies - like has been said to anything Brooks or Stephens writes - then we should stop pretending that either side has a moral authority.
