I believe Roger Ebert thought this was an underrated gem the year it came out. I've always loved the work of Lili Taylor, she's been one of the greatest actress of independent films for my lifetime. I don't think there's ever been a performer more willing to do anything for her work in film or Tv over the years. This was part of a long brilliant career of work of hers in the 1990s, capped by her greatest role in film in I Shot Andy Warhol and she's done superb work throughout the era of Peak TV, from her performance as the doomed Lisa Fisher on Six Feet Under, brilliant work in the underrated Hemlock Grove and Almost Human, paying three extraordinary characters in AmericaN Crime (she was one of those actors and actress who had a role in all three seasons), a brilliant stint as the mother of Tatiana Maslany's female evangelist in Season 1 of Perry Mason and now she plays Mary Todd Lincoln on Manhunt.
This wasn't Taylor's breakout role - she famously came of age in Mystic Pizza along with Julia Roberts - but it was the one that demostrated she was going to be one of the greatest actresses ever.
