I haven't seen the second season of Ted Lasso yet so I can't just. And I do admit I love Sudeikis' work, but I don't love Ted Lasso ONLY because of Ted Lasso.
I love it for Coach Beard who knows what to say and says it in few words. I love it for Hannah Waddingham who you wanted to hate in the Pilot and gradually came to understand her. I love it for Higgins that sweet little man whose always being pushed around and who knows everything. I love it for Keeley, who started out as a joke and now comes across as one of the most self-aware people. I love it for Roy who has to deal with getting older and the second phase. And I love it for Jamie, who hasn't grown out of the first.
I realize why so many people embrace Ted Lasso, the character - we've had twenty years of series where the only qualifier is that the lead had to be an anti-hero. We're not used the lead being a nice guy anymore. But there's so much to embrace in Ted Lasso, the series. Bill Lawrence is a master in making secondary and even third-string charatcers resonate in a way that even the greats don't. And as someone who had gotten his fill of so many comedies were laughs were genuinely because of humiliation and unpleasantness it was refreshing to see a show where the jokes were because of smart writing, character development and nicenss. Maybe I'll change my mind when I finally get around to Season 2. In the meantime, take a break and watch The Kominsky Method or Pen15. They're funny too, but they're really about how unpleasant life is, getting old in the first, being a kid in the second. They'll be a nice tonic.
