I Loved him for that too…except he doesn’t do that any more. He keeps leaning more to the conservative point of view. I don’t think he believes in what they preach, per se, but he likes that they yell whatever they want at people they dislike and face no consequences. Considering what happened to him in the past, I don’t entirely blame him for that.
I stand by everything I’ve said about Maher in every article I’ve written. He’s not a revolutionary comic — certainly not compared to even his contemporaries like Marc Maron or the late Bill Hicks. His act has not changed over forty years: he’s a reactionary who does think everything was better before. If he were an internet meme, he’d been one of those who kept telling people to toughen up. He has no use for children, thinks women are basically sex objects and thinks the worst possible thing is for a comedian to lose his job. His work was funny for awhile, maybe even up until the 21st Century. Since then, he’s just become a pain who likes the sound of his own voice. And I know his show was called Politically Incorrect once, That may have been funny once. Considering that one side now lives on that circle and Maher prefers their attitude if not their views…though if you watch him in some interviews, I’m beginning to wonder. It’s not any more.
