I spent years railing against Game of Thrones - mainly for critical reasons. I was enraged, first by the fact that it took Emmy nods for Best Drama from The Good Wife when that series was merely the greatest network series of all time - and then basically owning the Emmys awards from 2015 to 2019. I spent years trying to write my predictions as if the series didn't exist.
I always thought - and I know the attacks I will get from fans; i'M immune to them - that it was basically dungeons and dragons porn, nOPE Porn has less nudity. And when two series that are on a level of brilliance that Game is not and never was worthy of - Better Call Saul and The Americans got next to no awards while GOT basically owned them - I was outraged.
And seriously 32 Emmy nominatios for the Last Season? The one that everybody agrees ruined the series. I realize the Emmys will stick to narratives no matter what, but that was ludicrous. I think they were only nominated the series to try and increase the ratings for the broadcast. bad news, networks! It didn't work. You might as well have nominated Homecoming or given the grand prize to Succession.
As for the spinoffs - seriously HBO? Are you thinking all GOT fans are like abused spouses who might go back saying: "Well, this time it'll be different" I apologize if that was offensive, but can anyone deny there's a lot of manipulation. Here's an idea. Why didn't you give Lovecraft Country a second season? You know, a series people actually liked.
I realize this isn't the typical commentary that will appear on this column. I use this as a voice for fans of quality television who really thought the Emmys decision to stand by giving the same awards and nominations to series that decline in quality year after year was NEVER more evident in this case. Tell me if you disagree.
