I started watching sLOW hORSES last April when it looked like Season 3 had a chance to break into the Emmy nominations. I've always been a fan of Gary Oldman (who isn't) but it was one of those series where I'd fallen behind and I didn't have the time. I probably still wouldn't have tried had I not learned that the season for Slow Horses is six episodes long as opposed to the ten or 12 of most American streaming series (God Save The British) So I watched the first episode of Season 1 and after the opening and the MICK Jagger theme, I was hooked. Even before Oldman made his first appearance.
As someone whose watched Oldman and thinks he's one of the greatest acotrs in history I don't think i've ever seen him having so much with the slovenly, overweight Jackson Lamb. Every line out of his mouth is a joy and every scene he does with Kristin Scott Thomas is a marvel. I still haven't gotten to Season 3 but I knew by the time I got to the end of Season 2 the Emmys had made a mistake ignoring Oldman and the show.
Oldman has a decent chance at the Emmy for Best aCTOR this year and there's an excellent chance he'll be up next year as well. I think this is more of the line of dramas that have the gift for comedy that I'm always been fond of: The West Wing and Lost were the best examples of this when I was in my twenties Better Call Saul had a gift for comedy in the early seasons and in recent years both the Gilded Age and The Diplomat makes le laugh or at least smile along with the intrigue. I'm not sure it fits into the comedy genre but it's pretty clear that Slow Horses has joined the ranks of the bests shows of the new decade. Best of all its based on a series of novels by Mick Herron and the first three seasons apparently covered the first three books. Herron has written eight so far. I don't think they'll run out of material any time soon and Oldman has made it clear he'd be more than willing to keep playing that strange, strange game for that long.
