I think the only films on this list that were not considered Great Movies by Roger Ebert before he passed away were Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and EYES WIDE SHUT. He hated the first film at the time and his opinions had not changed before his passing. He didn't really like the second and he did very much admire the third. I suspect he would have gotten to Spartacus eventually had he lived long enough: I remember reading his reviwe of the directors cut and it was pretty close to a rave.

You know my feelings on The Shining so I won't relitigiate them here. Eyes Wide and Full Metal Jacket I very much respect (I think the former features one of Cruise's best performances). Strangelove, well, we all love that one. I've tried multiple times to watch 2001 and I just can't get through it. Visually it is a masterpiece I grant you but intellectually and emotionally it leaves me cold. Maybe someday I'll get there but I just can't yet.

"Of course I like to speak to you, of course I like to say hello. Not now but any time."

I have to say watching James Earl Jones in that movie (his film debut!) I don't recognize him. Not just because he's young but because he doesn't have 'The voice' yet. BTW, according to the cast list he is bombardier Lothar Zogg.

Another thing about that film. Most of the names are puns but Kubrick never dwells on it. Sterling Hayden is Jack D. Ripper but he's only referred to in the dialouge once as General JackRipper. Slim Pickens is 'King' Kong in the script but no one ever calls him anything but Major Kong and no one refers to George C. Scott as Buck Turdgidson once in the film. As far as I know this is the only movie Kubrick made that falls under the classification as a comedy and maybe the reason it works is that Kubrick remembers a rule of Ebert's "Funny names are not funny unless used by Groucho Marx or W.C Fields." He wanted to make a serious comedy and if we dwelled on the ridiculousness of the names for long, well, it wouldn't work.
