I wrote an article about this myself the day after the nominations about women directors and their, shall we say, problematic history of getting recognition from the Oscars. I agree Gerwig should have been nominated for Little Women and I'm still miffed on that. A larger problem may be that the Oscars seem to be willing to only nominate female directors once. Kathryn Bigelow was shafted for Zero Dark thirty and all anyone could talk about was what an atrocity it was Ben Affleck had been ignored for Argo. And of course when Jane Campion made history the world was still talking about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.
