If you read my article on the Emmy nominations, you might know that I highlighted the impressive level of diversity in this year's nominations in every category. On a separate note, there were five female directors nominated in the drama category, four in comedy (and one Muslim) and Issa Lopez is the first woman of LatinX origin (to my knowledge) to be nominated for both directed AND writing in any major category.
Also I should mention that Ripley features a non-binary performer Eliot Summer playing the male role of Freddie Miles. Summer was only in two episodes but you could not tear your eyes away from them. Summer was standing in deep shoes for this role, the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman, and if they keep getting these kind of roles, they'll be acting for a very long time.
I acknowledge the last of diversity (at least as far as LGBTQ representation0 in Drama, but by any other standard s this was one of the most diverse groups of nominees in this category I've seen...ever. Some of my favorite performers in history are nominated in this category - Idris Elba, Carrie Coon, Greta Lee, Christine Baranski. Representation might have looked better had Nathan Lane been nominated for his work in The Gilded Age. And i have to say as a fan of The Wire I was glad to finally get the Stringer Bell- McNulty faceoff we never got when the show was on the air.
I'm going to be writing a long article that will go up tonight about just how VERY white the Emmys was during so much of Peak TV. It's not entirely what you're talking about here, I know, but I'm actually making the argument that those who claim Peak Tv iS OVER (i DON'T for the record) there's a big honking reason this might not be as bad as the doom-criers think. I suspect much of this may not be news to you but considering that while this was going on, none of the critics were even mentioning it, it's almost impossible to believe that so many of us (myself included) missed it.
