It just occurred to me. After the towers fell, Republicans like Cheney argued that we had to 'go to the dark side' and Democrats, particularly on the left, yelled the loudest about our violations to the Constitutions and our civil liberites.
A quarter of a century later, the Republican thinking is now originalist in all concerns and the left argues the Constitution and so much about it is archaic and needs changing. I realize there are differences in degree but I find this reversal - particularly on the left - intriguing because it demonstrates that for all their progressive values, many of them are reactionary. Of course, most of them who complained Bush was going to be the worst president AFTER he'd been elected no doubt proudly voted for Nader in 2000, saying there was 'no difference' between him and Gore. I imagine Gen Z only knows who Al Gore is because they might have streamed An Inconvenient Truth and no doubt only do so to blame him for not doign anything "when he was Vice President."
By the way did you know so many leftist historians such the late Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky proudly described themselves as anarchists? That explains A LOT.
