It'll take some digging but it's there, particularly Saul. I wrote a lot about, particularly in the final two seasons. Right now Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn are apparently at work on a project for Apple as we speak. I don't even need to know the details to know I'm going to watch it.
As I write this last post, and as you are no doubt aware, Saul just completed its entire run having beeen skunked by the Emmys. I hold a grudge against Game of Thrones for the first three years it was on the air (I love Peter Dinklage; he took at least one, possibily two Emmys from Jonathan Banks.) I was disappointed Bob Odenkirn never won, but having watched all six of the nominated actors who defeated him, I really can't blame the Emmys. They had to make some very difficult choices and Rami Malek, Jon Hamm, Matthew Rhys and Sterling Brown all deserved the wins they got. Lee-Jung Jae is a harder sell, but his work in Squid Game was brilliant. I came very late to recognizing Succession's greatness - I didn't change my mind until the Conor's Wedding episode so I don't entirely blame the Emmys for choosing it the last three times. (If you go through my columns you will find many articles berating Succession from roughly 2019 to 2022 and a mea culpa after Conor's Wedding.) I was disappointed Bob Odenkirk lost but considering kieran Culkin spent the last week basically winning everything in sight, I can't blame them.
Rhea Seehorn is a bigger blow. And the fact that it took the Emmys until the last two seasons of the show to nominate her at all is another one of their bigger sins. I hoped against hope she would win tonight, and while I love Jennifer Coolidge calling The White Lotus a drama really doesn't make sense.
I should add that other organizations have been more generous over the years to Saul: Odenkirk took thrree Best Actor prizes from the Critics Choice Awards over the series run, and Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito each took a prize from it. The show won Best Drama in 2022. A different awards show the HCA (now Astras) which was only created in 2021 was just as generous: Last year it took four trophies, including Best Cable Drama (It tied with Succession.) Rhea Seehorn took the Best Supporting Actress prize from them both last year and this year. There are times I am proud to be a critics. Awards like those are one of those times. Indeed, the piece I post tonight will tell you as much.
