I've actually written about this in on a series about giving 18-21 year olds the right to vote. I will give you a link to the most relevant article but there has since been a creation of what I call the Lost Cause of the COunterculture which is as prevalent among the left as the Civil War is among Southerners of the right.

In their opinion during that decade America wa THIS close to achieving...something when they were marching in the streets demanding to end the war in Vietnam and somehow the people refused to listen to the wise advice of the teenagers who were telling the world that the society they lived in that had given those teenagers everything was corrupt, broken and a dictatorship. Their 'highpoint' of the anti-establishment campaign was to get LBJ off the ticket in 1968. Unfortunately once that happened they had no plan of what to do next, as they genuinely didn't like any of the alternatives - and couldn't vote for them anyway. So they marched on college campuses, screamed at the police and scared just enough undecided voters into either staying home or voting for Richard Nixon. I imagine there were a lot of ex-hippies who went to their graves certain that there was no difference between Nixon and Hubert Humphrey and if they genuinely believed that, they were bigger idiots than I think.

After Watergate, they revised the myth to say that all of the marching in the streets was meant to keep Richard Nixon out of power and the fact that the public chose not to listen to them - twice - showed how broken the system was. Watergate and Nixon's resignation was not a vindication but for them final proof that the system was irrevocably broken and they basically have said both parties are identicial ever since. They continue toi double down on this during the Reagan years both Bushes and indeed during Trump one and the lead up to the 2024

That the democrats have decided to embrace the 'heroism myth' of the 1960s shows that they've forgotten their own history: that 'resistance' cost the Democrats the White House in 1968 and has been hurting them ever since. I don't know why they've decided to embrace a failed narrative - maybe its because they're convinced winning the left was their path to power - but the history of the Presidency since 1968 is a stark violation of that belief. Embracing the left has never helped the Democrats win a Presidential election or a midterm; it's only hurt them. And I do hold the left accountable, certainly the Sqyad who the Democrats made the idiotic mistake of embracing in 2018 as the future of the party and has only hurt them in both Houses of Congress since.

The Resistance failed because it was a stupid and ill-formed idea from the start. Their battle cries were angry, violent and loud and have been pushing far more people away then they've ever won over. The left, as I've come to learn is proud of that fact. The Democratic Party has to make abreak from it if they - and American democracy - is to have future.
