Roger Ebert named this the best film of 1988. Looking back, the decision to give the Oscar for Best Picture and Actor to Rain Man do not hold up well at all. This is one of the best performances in Hackman's incredible career and it officially put Frances McDormand on the map. Watching her in this film, it's another reminder (as if we needed any) as to why she is one of the most versatile performers in history. Especially since she is so frail in this role - and frail is not a characteristic we associate with any performance McDormand would give in the future.
