Roger Ebert put this film in his book of Great Films and he did highlight the ending in particular. I'm reminded of Truffaut's famous quote that there could be no such thing as an anti-war movie because all films made battle seem glorious. Ebert pointed out Truffaut never saw this movie and could not: it was banned in France until near the end of Truffaut's life. I
