THANK YOU! I have been waiting for someone to realize that a female director was nominated for an Oscar this year, something that the Barbie fanatics around the world seem to have pretended did not happen. Triet is the first female director of an international film to get nominated for Best Director since Lina Wertmuller who was the first female director to be nominated for an Oscar at all.
I also concur fully with the very troubled history of Oscars nominating female directors no matter how significant the project. They also have the, shall we say, troublesome habit of playing one identity group against each other in these cases. John Singleton, who was the first African-American nominated for Best Director, might very well have achieved his historic nomination at the expense of Barbara Streisand in 1992 for Prince of Tides. (The nominations between Best Picture and Director did not correlate in 1991 as is often the case.)
BTW, I received two different fundraising emails from progressive causes urging me to sign a petition to stand with Gerwig as proof of sexism in movies. I guess that sexism only applies to AMERICAN female directors, which is another shitshow waiting to happen.
