The rare Best Picture that seems inevitable in retrospect and no one gave a chance too on Oscar night. Everyone thought it was going to go the far more tradtional Oscar bait films like Song of Bernadette or For Whom the Bell Tolls. Very good movies, but giving one of them the Oscar to them instead of Casablanca would have been much like How Green Was My Valley winning instead of Citizen Kane. Well, I guess the Oscars are like a broken clock. They get it right some of the time
