The Republicans seem determine to always find a new low for Vice Presidential candidates. First came Spiro Agnew, who could have cost Nixon the 1968 election and was a liabilty. Dan Quayle might have hurt Bush senior more had Dukakis not been such an uninspiring candidate. Sarah Palin absolutely tanked McCain's slim chance of winning the White House in 2008.

Vance starts with lower approval ratings than any of them: CNN posted taht Vance was starting with the lowest favorbility ratings of any vice presidential candidate in the history of polling (the last forty five years). Republicans were concerned about Vance before Biden dropped out. Now it's clear he's a liability. Vance already added nothing to Trump's chances of expanding his electoral base before the election: he's going to carry Ohio in a landslide and all of the voters Vance might appeal are already Trump voters. That didn't matter much before Biden dropped out. Now Vance is sinking him.

Trump has been a master for more than a decade at being able to make any perceived liability a strength. But he's already struggling to defend Vance's missteps and he can't seem to come up with a defense against being called 'weird' Two weeks in, the most he can seem to do is argue that when he and Harris debate Biden is going to show up and demand to debate him.

I have to hand it to the Democrats. I genuinely didn't think that a move like this would work. I'd heard that the campaign had been secretly preparing for Biden to drop out after the debate and I really believed that they had a plan in place. And yet two weeks after the fact Trump has been acting - pretty much as the Democrats thought he would. This is a man who seemed prepared to come up with any disparaging line for any opponent within hours. Two weeks, and he can't seem to come up with anything coherent. And Vance is doing everything in his power, to this point, to make things worse for him. Usually its the Democrats who have the innate ability to self-destruct. It sure as hell seems like their beginning to do so now. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of white men.
