There's also something very meaningful about Redford's line at the end when Newman asks him if he wants to get his cut. I won't reveal it for those who haven't seen the movie but it does say a lot about why the con really happened and that while Redford has evolved in the process of it, there's a part of him that knows he's still fundamentally the same. I actually admired him for it - it made it clear the real reason he had done even if he wasn't prepared to admit to himself.
