This is a good article but I have a comment on House of Leaves. I read that book twenty years ago and while I acknowledge it's solid writing, I've never been able to comprehend if I was missing something from it. Danielwski is clearly doing some very experimental things with the novel and I'm still not sure whether he's a genius or he's basically doing performance art with books. Having tried to read some of his books since then, I'm inclined to think its the latter.

A better example of this is Catriona Ward who in my opinion has revamped horror and put into a different style of fiction in works like The Last House on needless Street and her most recent novel Looking Glass Sound. Both of these novels read as if David Lynch and Mike Flanagan decided to write a novel and I mean this as a complement to both because a mere plot summary does little to describe the puzzle boxes these books have the deeper in you get. And they actually stick the landing with their final reveals which many of the best horror novelists don't.
