This is a very high bar you're setting when it comes to description. The closest I can come to thinking of it might be something along the lines of The Insider, which is another Michael Mann film but one that the cinematography rarely got in the way of the story or maybe Frost/Nixon which is a filmed version of a stage play but with only a few exceptions it both was faithful to it and yet added to the story. Are those the kind of movies you're thinking of?
