This is one of my favorite movies because it is so adult. My sister watched and rewatched it over and over when she was eight and nine and its brilliance stuck with me. And I have to say I do find the ending happy. The world is now a better place because the unicorns are in it. There is beauty in the world even if for the unicorn it will never be the same. The unicorn has learned of love and regret and that will harm her, but she's not alone any more. (I imagine you can read a lot into that.)

And remember the classic line that Schmendrick tells us when you consider about the ending:

"There are no real happy endings, because nothing ever ends."

I am a cis white male and I take a certain comfort in this. I think we all should.

And the thing it is an extraordinary film with one of the great voice casts in history (and in an era when you couldn't get celebrities to do animated features) some brilliant animations and a heart rending theme song. I think all of us can find something in The Last Unicorn. As for love and regret, I believe we're all stronger for it. The unicorn will be too.

After years of laboring for love in my blog on TV, I have decided to expand my horizons by blogging about my great love to a new and hopefully wider field.
