This is perhaps the most atypical film of David Lynch's entire career and yet it is also arguably his best. pART of you knows this is a David Lynch film and you wait for it to go into the world of weird that comes into small town America in so many of his other films. But he never does and as a result he creates one of the sublime films of his career.
Lynch announced this year that he has retired. He's suffered from empyhesema and he is forced to remain housebound because COVID might kill him. To paraphrase his iconic character, his body of work is wondrous and strange. It is hard to fathom that this is the same man who created the labyrthine Mullholland Drive and both the original and Return of Twin Peaks. I don't pretend I comprehended every film or show he made. But I will always admire his bravery
