To Either Lauren or Jessica (it really doesn’t matter which one of you I post it on; I’m writing it to your followers. The ones capable of independent thought)

A couple of weeks ago, one of you wrote an article titled: “Evil Triumphs When Good People Do Nothing.” It is rare that one of your columns makes me laugh hysterically but that one did, because I can’t honestly believe you could write that phrase with a straight face.

As someone who reads your columns with a sick fascination, I really wonder how you could have written that phrase. Because every single column either of you write fundamentally argues that good people should do nothing. It doesn’t even matter what the column is specifically about, because essentially they all say the same thing: Two to three thousand words focused on your issue of the day all of which center on the same theme: America/democracy/capitalism is broken; the country is inevitably doomed, looking for help for institutions like the media or politics or really anything is futile because there’s nothing can be done to fix it. Then you write two or three sentences making a half-hearted attempt to suggest something so minor that could be done, and then end your article with a sentence negating that saying that it probably won’t work. Then the next day you write the exact same column. All of your articles essentially say evil has triumphed, there’s nothing we can do, and read my next column. Then you soak up the praise of the people in your bubble who completely agree with you (much like the social media and cable news networks you regularly criticize) and pay no attention to anybody who offers a critique of you at all.

I find both of you, columnists who write these articles, and all of you who leave supportive messages utterly sickening to everything you claim to be arguing for. I mean seriously! Both you and Lauren have a hundred thousand people reading your column. Do you realize what you could do with that kind of following if you really wanted to change some part of this system? You could organize voting drives for candidates you believe in! Get together an arrange for a public march on the national capital! Hell, you stand for progressive values so much: do the work to form your own political party! Anything other than these self-congratulatory circle-jerks every time one of you right a column about how screwed the world is!

But of course you won’t. Because, like all the politicians/media/everything else you criticize on a regular basis, that would take work. And you don’t want to work or do anything constructive. Because trust me, everything your columns say is basically a variation on resistance or effort to even try to make a difference is futile: let’s all nod and wink at how futile it is. The abolitionists, the suffragettes, the civil rights marchers, those who admitting their sexuality when you couldn't even say the word without being marked as evil, everybody who did a single thing to try and make this world better place, would be utterly ashamed at how you complain that the world doesn’t believe in what they thought for and simultaneously shit on all their efforts as not making a difference.

Anyway, sorry to interrupt the praise that was being lavished on you for being a nihilist. I’m sure you have another column to write about horrible the system that allows you to make a living writing your message about horrible the system is for people like you. Go right ahead. You will anyway.
