When Roger Ebert gave a rave review to Punch Drunk Love (Adam Sandler's one truly great performance before Uncut Gems) he said about his lame comedies : "He can't keep doing those ridiculous comedies forever can he? Who would have thought he had such depths?)

Well, we now know he thought he could do the former. Uncut Gems shows he can do the latter as well. The fact that he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar proves the hypocrisy of the Academy. As much they love honoring one of their own, there are some lowly surfs who will never be worthy to sit at the circle. I speak of Jim Carrey and Steve Martin in particular, and if Bill Murray hadn't been so out of the world good in Lost in Translation, he wouldn't have been invited that year. A comic actor must completely reinvented him or herself as dramatic: witness Tom Hanks and Jamie Foxx. Meg Ryan might have shot the moon in Courage under Fire, they were never going to nominate her for anything and she more or less disappeared from Hollywood.

I realize this wasn't quite the point of your review but Sandler's performance was one of the greatest I've ever seen in a movie theater. I also knew there was no chance hey would even allow the possibility of 'And the Oscar goes to Adam Sandler' being said. (That said, watch his acceptance speech at the 2020 Spirit awards on youtube to see what we missed. It would have been awesome.
