You know Roger Ebert may have been the only critic to give a favorable review to this film. It wasn't his biggest blunder when it came to like a terrible film (he loved Episodes I and III unironically) but even he admitted he'd be in the minority.
Your idea reminds of another quote about how it wasn't the great movies that need to be remade but the ones that don't quite work. You could make that argument (sadly) for too many of Shamaylan's films and The Happening is the most obvious one. You're right. The premise is a chilling one. The execution, particularly with its casting, is dreadful. Ari Aster probably could do something brilliant with this (though after bEAU Is Afraid I'm not sure he can be entirely trusted for the visionary oversight anymore). John Krasinski could handle it too.
